They look minor, but the right choice determines the safety and life of the installation. Wall material decides plug selection. Different plug types are made for concrete, brick, aerated block and plasterboard; plasterboard needs toggle or metal cavity fixings, while concrete takes plastic plugs with steel nail fixings. The wrong plug lets the load pull out of the wall. With screws, thread form matters as much as length; wood screws have coarse threads and a sharp point, metal screws have fine threads. For bathroom and outdoor use, choose stainless or galvanised items — uncoated steel rusts quickly in damp conditions.
