With built-in appliances the most critical issue is niche dimensions. Because ovens, microwaves and dishwashers are recessed into furniture, the width, height and depth of the cabinet opening must match the figures in the appliance technical drawing. Settling the dimensions before the furniture is made is far easier than cutting cabinets afterwards. Ventilation clearance is a detail often missed. Ovens radiate heat while running; if the rear and top clearances specified by the manufacturer are not left, the appliance can overheat and its life shortens. In built-in sets the hob and oven do not have to be the same brand, but the depth and connection type of the oven beneath the hob must be compatible. Plan the electrical and gas connections from the start: built-in ovens usually need a high-amperage circuit, and gas hobs may require a gas line and detector. For extractor hoods, the distinction between ducted (extracting) and carbon-filter (recirculating) models matters; kitchens without a duct use carbon-filter models.
